Is It Safe To Use Tums During Pregnancy?

It is common during pregnancy period that women faces different changes in their body and some problems like heartburn or acid indigestion or acid re-flux. Heartburn is a burning sensation that occurs in area between throat and lower breast bone. This burning sensation expands from lower breast bone to throat. This is common discomfort faced during pregnancy and it may be first time for many women so it causes discomfort but it is harmful. Heartburns occurs in pregnant women due to physical and hormonal changes.

Hormone progesterone is produced by the placenta that relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus and it also relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach this allows gastric acids to seep back up and causes burning sensation.

When they look for solution for heartburn generally question rises Are Tums Safe during Pregnancy. Tums are not specifically created for pregnancy women suffering from heartburn. Tums or generic calcium carbonate is an antacid that provides fast relief from heartburn. During pregnancy tum should be taken with maintaining time gap from iron supplements that helps in achieving benefits of medicines as tums also provides calcium to the body.

It is better to maintain two hour gap between tums and iron supplements. It will better taking Tums during pregnancy after consulting doctor as antacids contains sodium bicarbonate. Although medication is not recommended during the period of pregnancy to avoid discomfort, Most of the pregnant women used tums for heartburn and results seemed Tums OK during pregnancy.

During pregnancy adjusting diet and lifestyle is the main that should be cared. Because diet and lifestyle changes can keep you away from heartburns. It is recommended to follow home remedies and avoid foods that causes heartburn like caffeine, beverages, and citrus fruits and there juices, tomatoes, spicy food, fried food, junk food, mint. It is recommended to have more number of short meals then single big meal and same with fluids it is better to have small quantities in lesser time span, and is recommended to maintain gap between food and sleep and avoid lie down immediately after eating. Eating chewing gum helps in stimulating salivary glands, saliva helps to neutralize acid.

Majority of pregnant women experienced Tums safe during Pregnancy with recommended dosage intake. Tums comes under “Category C” in FDA Pregnancy classification due to main reason that the medicine never crosses placenta but it was never officially tested on human body. It is always recommended to consult doctor before using these medicines so that you can discuss dosage and avoid unforeseen complications that may cause due to usage of other medicines and supplements.

Tums gives good results when taken before meal and even provides calcium to the body. The usage of tums is safe and recommended for heartburn only when they are used minimally and responsibly. Because overuse of tums leads to risks. Moderation is main key for medication in pregnancy.
